# Meet Robert

I've dedicated my career to people harmed by someone with more power: first as a prosecutor, then as a nonprofit executive and independent investigator, and now as a civil attorney.

## Harm doesn't happen in a vacuum.

As a prosecutor, I could hold offenders accountable in criminal court. As an independent investigator, I could uncover what institutions knew and how they responded. But I often watched the people who were harmed walk away without any meaningful remedy or recognition of what they'd lost, while the organizations that ignored warnings, protected themselves, or profited from the harm never had to answer for their part.

I started this firm to close that gap. Civil cases give the people who were harmed a voice of their own, and a way to hold accountable everyone responsible, not just the person who caused the harm directly.

## A career in law and justice, focused on your case.

I began my legal career as a law clerk at the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Western District of Virginia, then served as an assistant prosecuting attorney in Hampshire and Marion Counties, West Virginia, and as a special prosecutor for Grant and Hardy Counties. I tried felony cases before juries, chaired county multidisciplinary investigative teams, and served as the then-only state prosecutor on West Virginia's Human Trafficking Task Force.

From there, I served as general counsel and Senior Cyber and Economic Crime Attorney for the National White Collar Crime Center (NW3C), advising law enforcement and prosecutors on fraud, financial crime, and digital evidence. As a senior attorney with Zero Abuse Project, I trained prosecutors and investigators nationwide and led development of a federally funded open-source intelligence tool for child exploitation investigators.

For a decade, I also worked with GRACE, an organization that independently investigates abuse allegations within faith communities, eventually leading its Institutional Response division. I conducted or directed more than 70 independent investigations and developed the 60-plus-page protocol that guided them.

Today, alongside my legal practice, I lead Coursing Justice, which trains justice and child protection professionals across the country.

## Practice shaped by experience.

Every part of my career shapes a different kind of case.

Years of training investigators on digital evidence and firsthand prosecution of child exploitation guide my [online harm](https://robertpeterslaw.com/online-harm?hsLang=en) cases. Leading independent investigations showed me how institutions examine themselves, and how they avoid doing so, which matters in [employment cases](https://robertpeterslaw.com/employment?hsLang=en). My work advising on fraud and financial crime carries into [personal injury, negligence, and fraud](https://robertpeterslaw.com/personal-injury?hsLang=en) cases. Years as a government attorney and more than 70 investigations of institutions inform my approach to [civil rights and institutional accountability](https://robertpeterslaw.com/civil-rights?hsLang=en) cases.

Underneath it all are the hundreds of cases I prosecuted, which taught me how evidence holds up in a courtroom, and how to dismantle false narratives.
